Successful Agricultural and Mulch Poly Films
08/08/2008
Summertime is strawberry season and while there is nothing like the taste of fresh strawberries picked ripe, between the fumigation, mulching and planting the runners for next year, the picking and the bending, it’s much easier to buy them from local farmers than grow them yourself. Strawberry farmers are under the gun right now with crops threatened by a fungus commonly called "charcoal rot" which can destroy healthy strawberry plants and tighter fumigation controls. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued new rules governing fumigant pesticides, which are used to sterilize soil before the planting of strawberries, bell peppers and other crops throughout the country, because of the danger to human health and the environment.
Farmers need a mulch poly film that can hold up against the very corrosive effects of agricultural fumigants that are used to protect the strawberries from pests and fungi. DURA-Smooth™, developed by PolyPAK America for agricultural growers located in California was specifically designed for this purpose and has a U.V. resistance that effectively holds up against the sun and a variety of agricultural fumigants for a year or more.
Another challenge agriculture growers face is the rapid transmission of these fumigation chemicals through the mulch film and into the atmosphere. The US EPA and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation are presently setting rules to lower the emissions of the fumigants used by California agriculture growers. PolyPAK America is meeting the needs of the growers with POLY-Shield™, a poly mulch film that combines the quick and easy lay down capabilities of DURA-Smooth™ with strong barrier characteristics to reduce the amount of chemical fumigants released into the atmosphere.
After more than five years of use by prominent California agricultural growers in the Oxnard, Santa Maria and Salinas regions, both DURA-Smooth™ and POLY-Shield™ agricultural poly mulch films have proven to be more effective for strawberry and bell pepper crops than other brands of poly mulch films.
Good news for the strawberry growers and those of us who can’t wait to get our hands on those luscious ripe berries for a summer treat.
