Due to the high level of protection they offer, their professional appearance and light weight – which reduces mailing costs – poly mailers are very popular. They’re used to safely and economically ship books, textiles and a variety of mail order items. However, just about everything is evaluated for its effect on the environment these days, and poly envelopes have had their share of scrutiny.

Some consumers and companies are not aware that some poly mailers are actually environmentally-friendly. State-of-the-art technologies enable manufacturers to reduce their use of natural resources in the manufacturing process. These processes typically use less energy during production, and release fewer greenhouse pollutants into the atmosphere than processes used in the past. Some experts also claim that the poly envelope production actually creates less CO2 emissions than when producing other types of packaging materials.

Poly envelopes also create significantly less landfill waste than paperboard envelopes and, although sturdy, they are also light weight - DuraLite™ is a good example – which translates to less energy is used and less pollution created in the transportation of goods.

Some poly envelopes also use recycled plastic. ProLite™ poly shipping envelopes made by PolyPAK America, for example, are made with Enviro-Tuff™ - a multi-layered plastic containing both reprocessed and post consumer recycled plastic. PolyPAK also uses recycled high and low density polyethylene and other plastic materials that can be converted into a variety of plastic products, and they use reprocessed plastic from envelopes when manufacturing new ones. Their DuraLite™ poly envelopes are made with Rigur™ - a lightweight polyolefin film that includes post consumer recycled plastic.

As the demand for flexible plastic packaging increases in the U.S., Europe and other parts of the world, more and more consumers are demanding environmentally-friendly products and packaging materials. Companies would be wise to ensure the poly shipping envelopes and other plastic shipping materials they use come from a company that cares about the environment and is pro-actively doing something about it.

Green poly shipping envelopes and other packaging materials can help save the environment, and create goodwill for the companies that use them.
